RCMP in Coquitlam say a Good Samaritan saved two young boys from falling through thin ice on a local lake.

RCMP said they are impressed with the 55-year-old man’s “heroic action” after he saved the lives of the 10-year-old boys. Though police have provided little detail about what happened, the man was able to stop the boys from falling through ice on a small community lake near River Springs, according to a Thursday news release.

It is unclear when the rescue happened. Coquitlam RCMP did not return a request for clarification.

Police, firefighters and paramedics responded to 9-1-1 calls but arrived to find the boys safely ashore. They were taken to hospital and checked for hypothermia and shock.

“This is reminder that most surfaces that appear to have ice are not thick enough to hold much weight and to not venture onto these lakes, or similar bodies of water,” the news release said.
