Deputy chief Chris Doyle said its was a “surprise, defensive attack” and no efforts were made to capture the bear.

The injured camper and a friend hiked to an area where they were able to call for medical assistance.

Doyle said bear calls are increasing this summer as more people head outdoors amid the pandemic. He urged people to secure food supplies and other attractants.

He said campers should used bear-resistant containers and protective devices such as portable electric fences.
