Riding description

NDP energy critic and Opposition House Leader John Horgan dominated this riding in 2009 and is seeking a third term in office.

The riding includes Langford, as well as the Highlands, south Malahat, Metchosin, Sooke and Port Renfrew.

Transportation, traffic concerns, education and recreation have played key themes in this riding due to its growing population and use as a bedroom community for people who commute to work elsewhere in Greater Victoria.

The E&N rail line, and a commuter option through the West Shore to downtown Victoria, are also hot topic issues.

The provincial government’s decision to allow Western Forest Products to remove privately held land out of tree farm licenses, and concern over development of that land in Jordan River, have been elcecton issues in the past.
