Vancouver Whitecaps down to one 'keeper after loaning Evan Newton to USL side

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps are down another goalkeeper after sending veteran Evan Newton out on loan.

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps are down another goalkeeper after sending veteran Evan Newton out on loan.

The club announced Tuesday that it has loaned Newton, 33, to El Paso Locomotive FC of the USL Championship through the end of the 2022 season.

The native of Virginia Beach, Va., came to the 'Caps from the USL's Indy Eleven in 2021 and acted as a backup for 14 games last season, but did not figure into a match.

Newton's move comes after Vancouver sent star 'keeper Maxime Crepeau to Los Angeles FC in a blockbuster trade last week, receiving US$1 million in general allocation money and a 2025 draft pick in the deal.

Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster said Crepeau asked to be moved due to a "very special personal situation."

Canadian Thomas Hasal is the only 'keeper currently under contract with the 'Caps, though Schuster said in a statement Tuesday that the club is "in the process of targeting a goalkeeper to round out our group."
