HALIFAX — Hundreds of people are without power in the Maritimes following a nasty winter storm that brought strong winds and snow to the region.

Nova Scotia Power was reporting outages in Pubnico and Ingonish at about 7:30 a.m., while New Brunswick and P.E.I. also recorded outages but in smaller numbers.

Activity at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport was returning to normal, but there were still some cancellations and delays.

Schools also closed for a second day in parts of Cape Breton and western Nova Scotia, as well as in P.E.I. and New Brunswick.

Tuesday’s blizzard cancelled dozens of flights and closed schools, government offices and universities throughout the region.

Environment Canada issued blizzard warnings for the region Tuesday, along with freezing rain, wind and snowfall warnings for Newfoundland.

It says the highest wind gusts were recorded at 125 kilometres an hour in southwestern Nova Scotia, and Moncton, N.B., got the most snow, with 30 centimetres late in the afternoon as the snowfall tapered off.
