WINNIPEG — Heavy rains across Manitoba have prompted flood warnings for the northwest, Interlake and southwest parts of the province.

Up to 72 millimetres more rain is expected to fall in some areas over the next few days.

The Saskatchewan River near The Pas is expected to crest in the next week and a half and will likely be near 2011 levels.

Residents of the town of Reston have been pumping out their basements since Friday when heavy rain caused overland flooding in the Rural Municipality of Pipestone.

However, mitigation work done in The Pas and Saskatchewan over the past two years is expected to keep the community dry.

Manitoba Infrastructure Minister Steve Ashton praised the province’s neighbour, Saskatchewan, for taking measures to reduce water flow from its rivers.

Local states of emergency have been declared by the Rural Municipality of Kelsey and the village of Winnipegosis where six homes have been flooded.

Meanwhile, in Reston, one of the areas hardest hit by floodwaters so far, officials said the Pipestone Creek rose by 6.5 ft after more than 100 millimetres of rain fell in a very short period of time.
