B.C.’s police watchdog is looking into a Saturday night incident at the Uptown shopping centre that left a man seriously injured.

Saanich police received a report from the centre’s Walmart store about a shoplifter just before 11 p.m. Police said the man ran to an upper-level parking lot before falling from a ledge outside of a guardrail.

The man fell two to three storeys and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The probe by the Independent Investigations Office will determine what part, if any, police action or lack of action had in the fall.

The IIO is a civilian-oversight agency that probes police-related incidents resulting in serious harm or death.
