The mayor and council elected in View Royal this fall will see a pay bump come Jan. 1.

Town council has voted in favour of a staff recommendation to increase the mayor’s remuneration by 32.6 per cent to $44,687 annually, and pay councillors half that rate — $22,343.50 per year.

The recommendation was based on an independent market survey that calculated median pay among the region’s councils. That process kicks in every four years before an election, said Mayor David Screech.

View Royal’s decision comes after Colwood council approved a remuneration increase that doubled the salaries of mayor and councillors. The mayor will now receive $61,000 a year, while councillors will receive $30,000 after the Oct. 15 election.
