The University of Victoria has issued a safety alert after a sexual assault was reported early Sunday morning on campus.
The assault was reported to have happened about 1 a.m. near Cluster 60 housing, townhouses east of the campus circle drive.
No other details have been released.
Saanich Const. Markus Anastasiades said Monday that while the investigation is still in its early stages, police believe the two individuals involved did not know one another.
“This is a very sensitive file and we are working closely with the survivor by providing support.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Saanich police at 250-475-4321.
The university said in a statement Monday that security staff will be closely monitoring the area where the assault was reported. Campus security staff patrol the campus 24 hours a day, including student residences, it said, although anyone with an emergency is advised to call 911.
