A driver and passenger were taken to hospital after a two-car collision sent their vehicle down a steep embankment along the Pat Bay Highway on Monday morning.

Stacey Lee, deputy chief of Central Saanich Fire, said a small red SUV plunged about 15 metres into a ditch near Danica Place and came to a rest in a patch of blackberry bushes.

The vehicle’s front end sustained major damage.

Lee said the driver had to be carried out on a stretcher while the passenger made her way up to the ambulance on her own.

Both women were taken to hospital to be treated for undisclosed injuries.

The other driver did not require medical assistance.

Details of what caused the crash were not immediately known. Central Saanich police and the Saanich Fire Department were also on the scene.

The highway’s northbound lanes were briefly closed before reopening to one-lane traffic while the rescue took place.
