Two people, one with gunshot wounds, were taken to hospital with serious injuries after a shooting in Nanaimo on Friday.

Others were treated for the effects of bear spray after what appeared to be a targeted incident, police said.

One person taken to hospital had a firearm injury and the other was assaulted, said B.C. RCMP spokesman Sgt. Chris Manseau.

An undisclosed number of people were suffering the effects of bear spray.

RCMP and paramedics were called to a home in the 200 block of Needham St. shortly after 10:30 a.m. where they found several people indoors.

“The Nanaimo RCMP strongly suspect that the suspects and the victims are known to each other, and there is no threat to the public at this time” Manseau said.

The Nanaimo RCMP serious crimes unit is leading an investigation into the incident.

Officers were gathering statements, talking to neighbours, canvassing for eye-witnesses and looking for possible video surveillance.

Anyone with information or who was in the area and has dashcam footage is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
