Thieves break through wall of Douglas Street business to get at Apple iPads and computers

Thieves could be illegally selling stolen Apple computer products worth a combined total of about $40,000, Saanich police report.

Thieves could be illegally selling stolen Apple computer products worth a combined total of about $40,000, Saanich police report.

IPads, MacBooks and Mac Mini computers were all stolen from Westworld Computers on Douglas Street in Victoria around 3:15 a.m. Monday after thieves broke through the wall of a neighbouring business.

A dozen alarm activations were set off in the building, located on Douglas Street near the Tolmie Avenue intersection, but by then it was too late.

“In this case, they went into an empty store and bashed their way through,” Sgt. Dean Jantzen of Saanich police said.

This was the second time people have entered the store this way, so the latest burglars had to remove about 50 screws to get through a reinforced wall.

“They were in there for a good length of time,” Jantzen said. “This should be a lesson to anyone who thinks a half-inch piece of drywall is a way to prevent a break-in, that’s not the case.”

Saanich police also responded to a similar break-in attempt at Best Buy at Uptown Centre on Sunday at 1:15 a.m.

Officers found the front door pried open and an indication that someone had tampered with the security gate.

Police urge anyone aware of Apple products being offered for sale at reduced rates to contact the Saanich Police at 250-475-4321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
