The lighting up the sequoia tree on the grounds of the legislature for the holiday season has been rescheduled for Dec. 8.

The family-friendly event was originally supposed to take place on Nov. 24, but was postponed due to a protest taking place on the grounds on the same day.

The light-up is part of the Christmas Lights Across Canada celebration, with sites and monuments in different provincial and territory capitals lighting up for the holiday season, symbolically linking Canadians together in the celebration of winter.

The event will include musical performances by the Victoria Children’s Choir and James Bay Community Chorus

Those expected to be in attendance include Songhees Nation Elder Clarence (Butch) Dick, Speaker Raj Chouhan and Victoria-Beacon Hill MLA Grace Lore, whose two children will symbolically throw the switch to light up the tree.

The event will be held outside, with cookies and hot apple cider provided after.

Light bulbs outlining the dome and entrance to the legislature have been changed to red and green until Jan. 7.

The event will start at 6 p.m. around the main exterior staircase of the legislature.
