Residents of Vancouver Island have endured a series of power outages due to heavy snow and strong winds on Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, B.C. Hydro crews were restoring power to about 4,500 customers in the Qualicum Beach area.

Outages also hit areas of Campbell River, Courtenay, Port Alberni, Sayward and Zeballos. A transmission outage knocked out service to Tahsis and Gold River.

Ferry cancellations due to high winds prevented B.C. Hydro crews from travelling to Hornby Island for repairs. Repairs were also being made to restore power to parts of Pender Island.

On the south Island, where the weather was a little calmer, the power mostly stayed on. But there were some outages near Port Renfrew.
