Police probe Cowichan crash that killed two people, dog

RCMP are investigating a collision that killed a Chemainus motorcyclist, a pedestrian and a border collie in Lake Cowichan.

RCMP are investigating a collision that killed a Chemainus motorcyclist, a pedestrian and a border collie in Lake Cowichan.

A 49-year-old local woman was crossing the Youbou Highway with the dog in a marked crosswalk at Neva Road when they were struck by a motorcycle at 8: 40 p.m. Saturday.

The eastbound 2008 BMW motorcycle was driven by a 60-year-old man and carrying a passenger, a 49-year-old Crofton woman.

It was still daylight, the roadway was clear and dry and there were "excellent road conditions," said Cpl. Krista Hobday of Lake Cowichan RCMP on Tuesday.

A traffic analyst will determine the speed of the motorcyclist, Hobday said.

"None of that information is available to us at this time."

The female pedestrian and the dog died at the crash site, while the motorcyclist died on the way to hospital.

The female passenger was kept overnight for observation and was released.

Alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor.

The tragedy has touched three small Island communities as well as members of the Lake Cowichan RCMP who knew the woman who died.

Names of the victims are being withheld while family members, some of whom are out of the province, are notified.
