Police officer, travelling home from hospital treatment, helps distressed woman climbing off-ramp

A Victoria police officer went well above and beyond the call of duty Wednesday by helping a woman in distress while he was being transported from hospital after treatment.

The officer, who was leaving Victoria General Hospital, noticed a woman in distress scaling the Helmcken Road off ramp.

Police Chief Del Manak said the woman was getting ready to jump.

In a social media post, Manak, who punctuated his post with the hashtag #proudchief, said officers started negotiating with the woman and a third officer pulled her to safety.

The first officer, who has not been named, was hospitalized Wednesday morning after being assaulted while apprehending a man suffering a mental-health crisis.

Officers went to a motel in the 100-block of Gorge Road East about 10 a.m. after a man called police, threatened to kill people and said that there was a dead person on his balcony.

When officers tried to apprehend him, the man began to fight and punched one officer several time. The injured officer was treated for a concussion and was unable to complete his shift.
