Nanaimo RCMP have issued a warning about several incidents of spiked drinks at a number of city nightclubs.

Officers first became aware of the situation May 6 when they saw paramedics tending to two people outside a nightclub who looked to be extremely intoxicated.

Both had to be hospitalized.

Police determined that the two might have ingested an intoxicating substance without their knowledge, and learned later that as many as six people might have had their drinks spiked May 6 and 7.

“These situations can occur at any time and anywhere,” said Const. Gary O’Brien. “As a result, it is extremely important that club-goers be extremely watchful of their drinks.”

Police believe there could be other victims who have not come forward yet.

They offer the following tips:

• Always keep your drink in sight.

• Never accept a drink from someone you don’t know.

• Have someone be responsible for your drink when you are on the dance floor or in the bathroom.

• Alert your friends if you become light-headed, nauseous or have difficulty breathing all of a sudden.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
