A white Ford F150 pickup ran a red light on Old Island Highway just before the Trans-Canada Highway on-ramp early Monday and crashed into a Honda Civic, West Shore RCMP say.

The Civic had been turning left from the Island Highway from View Royal toward Colwood at the time of the 6 a.m. crash.

The pickup veered into the meridian concrete barrier under the railway bridge at Old Island Highway, where the on-ramp to the Trans-Canada Highway begins, and wound up on top of the barrier.

The collision at the intersection of Old Island Highway and Burnside Road West resulted in severe front-end damage to both vehicles.

The driver of the Honda Civic was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the F150 was uninjured and charged under the Motor Vehicle Act for driving without due care and attention.

Southbound lanes heading into Victoria were shut down for about 1.5 hours while crews worked to clear the scene, causing a significant backup in traffic for morning commuters, police said.

Both vehicles were towed and all lanes of travel were reopened by 7:30 a.m.

B.C. Transit put detours in place for several routes around the Old Island Highway.
