Parksville commercial building damaged in Thursday fire

Heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the Memorial Avenue blaze, which was called in to the Parksville Fire Department by a passerby about 6 a.m.

A Thursday-morning fire in Parksville did significant damage to a two-storey commercial building.

Heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the Memorial Avenue blaze, which was called in to the Parksville Fire Department by a passerby about 6 a.m.

Fire Chief Marc Norris said the building has at least three tenants but no one is believed to have been inside at the time of the fire.

The building is not fit for occupation, he said, adding the fire was on the back of the building and the roof.

“So the roof is collapsed in on the second floor,” said Norris. “We’re not sure if it started on the exterior of the back — if it started there, it’s likely suspicious.”

The neighbouring Oceanside Animal Hospital, which had no animals inside at the time of the fire, closed for the day.

Firefighters from Errington and Qualicum provided assistance, Norris said.
