The occupants of a house on fire Monday on Cooper Road in the Songhees Nation had to jump out of windows to get to safety.

Three people have been displaced and are being assisted by West Shore Emergency Support Services.

View Royal Fire Chief Paul Hurst said his department was joined by crews from Colwood and Langford in responding about 3:10 p.m. and arrived to find a home “well-involved in fire” and a vehicle on fire in the driveway.

A second alarm brought in Esquimalt firefighters, bringing the total at the scene to 23.

A neighbouring house began to catch fire but crews managed to control the spread, Hurst said.

“The strong winds pushed the fire to the rear yard where five cars caught fire, along with heavy brush behind the house,” he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
