A 32-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night in what Nanaimo RCMP are calling an unprovoked attack on another man, who was slashed across the face with a razor and punched in the face.

The incident happened about 6:30 p.m. at the city’s Country Club mall. Police responded to a report that a security officer and another person were trying to restrain the attacker.

Officers arrived within a few minutes and arrested the suspect, who spat in one officer’s face and kicked at others, police said.

The victim told police he does not know the suspect and had had no prior interaction with him.

Witnesses told police the suspect had been acting strangely before the assault and his behaviour was causing them concern.

Police said the victim sustained a shallow cut on his face and decided not to go to hospital for treatment.

The suspect, who faces charges of assault with a weapon, assaulting a police officer and breach of probation, was remanded in custody and was due for a Wednesday court appearance.
