Campbell River firefighters conducted a rope rescue Monday when a man was trapped in a cargo ship after a loading chute collapsed into the hold.

Fire Chief Thomas Doherty said crews were called about 8:20 a.m. to a 153-metre cargo ship docked in the area.

The man was trapped about nine metres down.

Firefighters were able to make their way into the hold and rescue the man, then walked him to a waiting ambulance. He had minor injuries.

“It’s one of the things that we maintain our skills for, in case this does happen,” Doherty said.
