A 35-year-old man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle while lying in the middle of a Courtenay road early Wednesday.

Comox Valley RCMP responded to a report about the incident on Ryan Road at approximately 1 a.m.

Witnesses told officers the man was lying in the road when a vehicle just missed hitting him.

The driver pulled over to the side and activated the vehicle’s hazard lights to try to warn other drivers, but another driver heading through the area did not spot the man and hit him.

That driver stayed at the scene and co-operated with police.

“At this time we do not know what the man was doing in the middle of the road,” said Const. Monika Terragni. “We will continue our investigation and will work with the B.C. Coroners Service to determine all the factors leading up to this man’s death, including whether or not he may have suffered an injury or medical incident prior to being struck by the vehicle.”
