North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are looking for witnesses after an injured man was located on the grounds of Alexander Elementary School.

B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics alerted police about 12:20 a.m. Thursday.

Officers arrived to find man in the Beverly Street school’s playground area with injuries to his face that were consistent with an assault. He was unable to give a description of his assailant or assailants.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police believe the man was involved in an altercation on the school grounds in the hour before he was assaulted, said B.C. RCMP Sgt. Chris Manseau.

Contrary to rumours on social media there is no indication that any weapons were used in this altercation, Manseau said, adding that such rumours can interfere with the investigation.

The playground area was closed Thursday morning to allow for the collection of evidence.

Police continue to gather evidence, and said a group of youths might have been at the scene before or during the assault.

Call North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-746-5522 with any information.
