Man in wheelchair struck by pickup truck in Nanaimo

Alcohol and speed have been ruled out as factors, Nanaimo RCMP said.

A man in a wheelchair suffered serious injuries and had to be airlifted to Vancouver for treatment when he was hit by a pickup truck in Nanaimo on Wednesday evening.

The victim, who is in his early 60s, was hit near the intersection of Railway Avenue and Fifth Street about 8 p.m. by an an older-model Ford Ranger that had just driven up the crest of a hill on Fifth, said Nanaimo RCMP.

The man was travelling adjacent to the railway tracks that cross Fifth and was not in a marked crosswalk, police said.

The woman driving the truck, also in her 60s, and her passenger were unhurt.

Alcohol and speed have been ruled out as factors.

The truck was impounded and will undergo a mechanical inspection.
