Victoria police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found downtown early Saturday.

Patrol officers were called to a parking lot in the 800-block of Fisgard Street just before 5 a.m. for a report of a deceased man.

The man was confirmed to be dead at the scene.

Detectives with VicPD’s Investigative Services Division and officers from VicPD’s Forensic Identification Services are continuing the investigation. The B.C. Coroners Service has started an independent investigation.

The parking lot is between two apartment buildings. On Saturday, it was shielded with a blue screen; a large construction dumpster and a small wagon of bags could be seen in the parking lot.

“We are working to determine if it is a suspicious death,” VicPD spokesman Cam MacIntyre said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

“Many sudden deaths require some investigative work before we can rule out anything suspicious. It is too early to confirm whether or not this is suspicious.”

A woman who lives in one of the apartment buildings said she didn’t see or hear anything, and woke up to the presence of police cars on the street and officers on the scene.

Police are asking the public for any information about the death. Call 250-995-7654, extension 1. To report what you know anonymously, call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
