Police say a man whose body was found after a Nanaimo house fire last week is a victim of homicide.

Nanaimo RCMP have identified the man as Trevor Stross and said the 40-year-old man, of no fixed address, had recently arrived in Nanaimo. He was known to travel between Victoria and Nanaimo, RCMP said.

Stross’s body was found by fire crews at a home on Athletic Street in Nanaimo’s south end on Thursday.

Emergency crews were called for reports of smoke billowing from the windows of the home about 5 p.m. The blaze was out within 40 minutes.

When fire crews entered the house, they discovered the body, police said.

The death was deemed suspicious and the case was turned over to Nanaimo RCMP’s serious crime section.

Nanaimo RCMP ask anyone who had recent interactions with Stross to contact them at 250-754-2345 and quote file No. 2022-27862.
