Independent investigators are probing a police-involved shooting that left a 35-year-old man dead in Qualicum Beach on Thursday.

About 6:30 a.m., Oceanside RCMP were asked to assist paramedics as they attended a call about a man who had reportedly stabbed himself inside a vehicle on the 39000 block of Inland Island Highway.

Through 911 calls, the officers were advised that the man was running down the highway and that someone was trying to restrain him.

“Upon police attendance, a struggle ensued between police and a male and shot(s) were fired by police,” according to B.C. RCMP.

Paramedics immediately went to the scene to provide medical assistance to the man. “The 35-year-old man has since succumbed to his injuries,” police said.

Two police officers suffered minor injuries during the struggle and were taken to hospital for medical attention.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been deployed. The office investigates officer-related incidents that result in death or serious harm in order to determine whether an officer might have committed an offence.

With the matter under investigation by the IIO, RCMP said they will not release further information.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.
