Inmate escapes Port Coquitlam pre-trial facility, considered 'dangerous'

RCMP say Rabih Alkhalil left in a van before 7 p.m. Thursday night (July 21) with two others posing as contractors.

A 35-year-old man is unlawfully at large after escaping a Port Coquitlam facility.

Rabih Alkhalil — also known as 'Robby' — is an inmate at the North Fraser Pre-trial Centre (1451 Kingsway Ave.) and left before 7 p.m. on Thursday night (July 21) in a van with two others that posed as employed contractors.

Mounties were informed at 7:30 p.m. of Alkhalil's disappearance.

According to pre-trial centre staff, he and the suspects left in a white Econoline van and travelled westbound on Kingsway Avenue.

Alkhalil is considered dangerous, says Coquitlam RCMP spokesperson Const. Deanna Law, and the public should not approach him if seen.

He's currently facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the January 2012 Vancouver death of Sandip Duhre, who was gunned down at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre.

The shooting occurred in a busy restaurant occupied by patrons, including the Cuban women’s national soccer team.

Alkhalil was charged with the murder of Duhre, and was extradited from Greece to face charges.

He's one of two accused in the case; a third was split for a separate trial following a judge's decision in March this year.

Alkhalil is described as:

  • Middle Eastern
  • 5'10"
  • 166 pounds
  • Short black hair
  • Brown eyes
  • Last seen wearing...
    • Black jump suit
    • High visibility vest

Anyone with more information on Alkhalil or his whereabouts is urged to call 911 right away.

Law adds police are working with B.C. Corrections in the active investigation.
