The 800 students at the new Royal Bay Secondary School will head to classes along a roadway named for Canadian cyclist Ryder Hesjedal.
Hesjedal, who attended Belmont Secondary before becoming an international champion, was on hand with Education Minister Peter Fassbender and school district officials to break ground on the new $40.8-million Royal Bay Secondary on Friday.
Access to the new Colwood school will be along Ryder Hesjedal Way. It will be a special road designed to honour the active lifestyle embodied by Hesjedal.
The new road will feature a greenway, separated from the road, with bicycle lanes and sidewalks.
The school, set to open in the fall of 2015, will also feature a rooftop basketball court, an asphalt rubber running track, a teaching kitchen and a 350-seat theatre.
Royal Bay and Belmont Secondary in Langford, now undergoing its own $53.9-million rebuild, will include neighbourhood learning centres that provide services such as family support, health screening and child care to the community.
