Halloween-masked robbers hit Bottle Depot, assault staff

At least two staff members at the Bottle Depot were assaulted during the robbery Wednesday afternoon.

Saanich police are on the hunt for two men who used Halloween-style masks to pull off a brazen afternoon robbery at a bottle-sorting business on Quadra Street.

At least two staff members at the Bottle Depot in the 3900 block of Quadra Street, near McKenzie Avenue, were assaulted during the robbery just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Two men in masks entered the business, assaulted at least one staff member, and grabbed the till containing cash, police said. Another employee chased the suspects as they ran out of the store, only to be pepper-sprayed by one of the robbers.

Both robbers fled the area on foot, going south on Quadra Street toward Reynolds Road. A search using police dogs was unsuccessful and the robbers remain at large.

The men arrived in a grey Honda Civic hatchback and parked in the business lot. The vehicle has been seized by police as evidence.

Investigators continue to collect evidence, including video surveillance footage from nearby businesses.

The men are described as being between 20 and 30 years old. Both were wearing black clothing. One had a black bucket hat, the other a hoodie with gloves.

Police ask anyone with information, including any dash-cam footage from the area, to contact them at 250-475-4321. Anonymous reports can be made through the Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-8477.
