There could be more snow during the weekend in Greater Victoria.
Saturday appears “unsettled” with wet flurries, but Environment Canada meteorologists are forecasting sun and temperatures around 3 C for Sunday. That’s warmer than it has been, but below the average of 9 C for this time of year.
Daily records for snowfall in Greater Victoria were set Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, based on accumulations recorded at the Victoria International Airport weather station.
And the record for February snowfall in Greater Victoria — 39.6 centimetres, set in 2014 — has also been broken, said Environment Canada meteorologist Carmen Hartt.
So far this month, 60.3 cm has already fallen at the airport weather station, which has records back to 1941. However, that’s still well off the 117.9 cm recorded at Gonzales weather station in Victoria in February 1916.
The average snowfall for February is 6.3 cm.
A mix of rain and snow was expected overnight Thursday, though some areas could receive only snow, Hartt said.
Temperatures were expected to hover around 0 C.
In Greater Victoria, it’s expected there will be more melting today than freezing, she said.
The forecast was much the same north of the Malahat to Campbell River, but residents there were expected to see snow rather than rain overnight and into today, Hartt said.
The Greater Victoria, Saanich and Sooke school districts were open Thursday after three days of closures. Saanich school district superintendent Dave Eberwein said that the district worked hard to get buildings ready along with shovelling and sanding to prepare for the opening. All school bus routes were checked the night before, he said.
Greater Victoria school district superintendent Shelley Green said she was excited to see students back in school on Thursday.
“It’s been a long time with this unusual snow scenario, so we’re so happy to invite our kids back in and our staff for a wonderful day,” Green said.
All three school districts in Greater Victoria have a professional development day today, and Monday is Family Day, so students will have another stretch of days off.
