Three cars were damaged after a fire broke out under a carport in James Bay early this morning.

Victoria Fire rushed to an apartment at 640 Dallas Rd. at 2:22 a.m. to find a vehicle engulfed in flames, said battalion chief Dave Bicknell. Flames had spread to the wood-covered ceiling and back wall of the carport. Firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading and extinguished the blaze within a few minutes.

The car on fire was destroyed and two cars on either side of it suffered significant heat damage, Bicknell said. The apartment building did not have to be evacuated.

Fire investigators are trying to determine what sparked the fire, which caused about $70,000 in damage.
