Last week, the City of Delta raised the Ukrainian flag outside City Hall in Ladner.

The City of Delta will be donating $5,000 towards Ukraine relief efforts.

At Monday’s council meeting in North Delta, council unanimously supported a motion brought forward by Coun. Jeannie Kanakos that the City of Delta donates $5,000 to the Canadian Red Cross.

“My thoughts are with the people of Ukraine as they face unspeakable acts of war and aggression by Russia,” said Mayor George Harvie. “In the face of this invasion and this humanitarian crisis, the people of Ukraine are showing incredible bravery and strength. It is my hope that with the ongoing support of allied nations like Canada, Ukraine will return to a peaceful state.

“The City of Delta has joined cities across the world in lighting up civic facilities with blue and yellow to show our support with Ukraine. Staff last week joined with me in raising a Ukrainian flag at city hall in a show of solidarity for the people of Ukraine. We the City of Delta stand with Ukraine against acts of aggression today and every day.”

Harvie also encouraged residents of Delta if there were able too, to donate to the Canadian Red Cross in support of relief efforts.

“We want to lead by example and we hope that other residents and businesses will also donate their support,” said Kanakos.

Other councillors, echoed the words of Harvie and Kanakos in pledging their support for the people of Ukraine.

“Horrific images of people of what they are going through,” said Coun. Bruce McDonald. “It is right there in front of us. I’m proud to wear the flag of Ukraine as a pin on my shirt and if there is anything else that we can do, then we need to do so.”
