Oak Bay police had the gruesome task last week of putting down a deer after it became impaled on an aluminum fence post.

The situation is not unusual, said Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties. “Probably every few months, I hear about one where the deer has tried to get over a fence and ends up impaling itself,” he said.

The latest case happened in a yard on Burdick Street. “It’s pretty graphic and pretty tragic for the animal, as you can imagine,” Bernoties said.

The deer is humanely put down at the scene with a police handgun. “And then public works comes and takes the animal away.”
