Nanaimo RCMP say a 13-year-old cyclist narrowly avoided serious injury Friday morning when his bike collided with a car in an intersection.

Police said the youth was riding through the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Sixth Street about 8:30 a.m. when he hit a Hyundai sedan.

The youth was treated at the scene by paramedics and did not appear to have significant injuries, police said.

The vehicle suffered minor damage.

The 22-year-old driver remained at the scene and is not facing any charges.

Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien called the incident a wake-up call for the teen. “Firstly, he was riding his bike without a helmet, and then rode his bike through the intersection without any regard for other vehicles and his safety.”

Failure to wear a helmet while cycling can result in a $29 fine, police said.
