Cloverdale Elementary School and other buildings in the area were evacuated shortly before the end of classes Wednesday after a gas leak in the 3400-block of Quadra Street, which borders the school.

The evacuation order, which enveloped the area from the intersection of Cook Street and Cloverdale Avenue to Holmes Street, was lifted around 5:40 p.m and residents were told it was safe to return to the area.

Cloverdale Elementary students were let out onto the back field as a precaution about 2:25 p.m. for pickup on the advice of the Saanich Fire Department, and a notice was sent to parents.

The school day typically wraps up at 2:37 p.m.

The leak was caused by crews hitting an unmarked gas line, the District of Saanich said.

There was also a small fire in a nearby residence that firefighters put out, the district said.

An evacuation centre was set up at Cedar Hill Golf Course.

Fortis has said it will follow up with area residents regarding any service interruptions.
