A body discovered off the Oak Bay waterfront on Sunday is that of Iman Bulghani, the B.C. Coroners Service confirmed Wednesday.

Bulghani, a University of Victoria student from Saanich, had set off with a friend in a fibreglass canoe from Telegraph Bay Cove about 10:30 p.m. on July 6. The young men, both 20, were headed to a nearby island when a large wave swamped their canoe.

The canoeists, who weren't wearing life-jackets, clung to a bag filled with camping supplies, but became separated. The survivor, a Saanich man, was rescued about 12:30 a.m. from a rock near Mary Tod Island, off Oak Bay.

An extensive, 13-hour search was called off on July 7.

On Sunday, a kayaker spotted a body floating near Tod Island off Oak Bay. A police marine unit recovered the body.

The B.C. Coroners Service has notified the family and continues to investigate Bulghani's death.
