A person travelling on a B.C. Transit bus on Saturday morning in Esquimalt has died following a medical incident.
An eastbound Route 15 bus was seen parked at the intersection of Esquimalt and Admirals roads with its hazard lights flashing and interior emptied of passengers on Saturday morning.
A B.C. Emergency Health Services spokesperson said in a statement that two ambulances were dispatched to the area shortly after receiving a call around 10:30 a.m. regarding a medical emergency.
A passenger who was on the bus said the man who died was unresponsive and leaning sideways at an extreme angle on his seat.
His hands were blue and it was unclear whether he still had a pulse, said the passenger, who did not want to be named.
Paramedics deployed a defibrillator and conducted chest compressions on the man for nearly 30 minutes.
“They did everything. He never came back,” the passenger said.
The cause of death has not been made public, but B.C. Transit said the passenger experienced “a significant medical incident” prior to emergency responders arriving on scene.
“Our thoughts are with all those involved in the incident and B.C. Transit shares our heartfelt condolences with the family of the deceased,” B.C. Transit said in a statement.
