B.C. Ferries is dropping the fuel rebate to customers to 0.5 per cent from 1.5 per cent as of Aug. 1 because fuel costs have been climbing.

The change means customers will pay 10 cents more for an adult and 30 cents more for a vehicle on Metro Vancouver-Vancouver Island routes, and five cents more for an adult and 20 cents more for a vehicle on the inter-island routes.

The fuel rebate will be 0.5 per cent on average on all routes, with the exception of the Port Hardy-Prince Rupert, Prince Rupert-Haida Gwaii and Port Hardy-Central Coast routes. Those routes have a separate mechanism for the cost of fuel and the rebate will remain at 1.5 per cent until further notice.

Customers have been seeing fuel rebates or surcharges imposed for 17 years to help the company manage changes in fuel prices.
