Saanich police have made an arrest following a series of 11 break-ins at several University of Victoria buildings.

The first was in June 2021 and nine have been reported in the last month and a half. Generators, tools and electronics are among the items that have been stolen.

The most recent incident was Jan. 12, when an alarm at the UVic bookstore was triggered at 4:30 a.m. Campus security officers found a man coming out of the store and talked to him briefly before he fled.

Saanich police arrived but the man could not be located.

Evidence from that incident and others led police to a 38-year-old man with a history of property-related crimes. He was arrested Sunday and is believed to be responsible for several of the break-ins.

The man has been released with conditions.

Police said that the efforts of campus security were crucial during the investigation.
