A $12.8-million grant from the province will help Victoria pay for improvements at Royal Athletic Park and the redesign of Centennial Square.

The city plans to use $8.3 million of the grant at Royal Athletic Park, upgrading washrooms, spectator seating, lighting and accessibility features.

The rest of the grant from the Growing Communities Fund — $4.5 million — will go to the $11.2-million redesign of Centennial Square.

Work at Royal Athletic Park is to be completed by 2027, while the Centennial Square redesign is to begin next year and completed by 2026.

The Centennial Square redesign will include water features, new washrooms, a commercial kiosk, green spaces and trees, and improved lighting. The central fountain and large sequoia tree in the square’s east end will be removed.
