Watch a traditional lion dance parade followed by a kung fu demonstration Sunday in Chinatown, as students of the Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club show off their strength, stamina, flexibility and dance skills. A lion dance usually incorporates the various stances a kung fu practitioner undertakes.

The non-profit club, founded in 1974, is the only place in Canada teaching and practising the hung fut style of kung fu. This style of martial art was created nearly 400 years ago at a southern Shaolin monastery in China. The two senior instructors at the club have more than 50 years of combined experience.

The event is free and photography is welcome. The performances will start at about 1: 30 p.m. Sunday at the Gates of Harmonious Interest in Chinatown (corner Fisgard and Government Streets). For more information, contact the club between 7 and 9 p.m. Monday and Friday at 250-386-3713, or go to hungfut.ca.
