Avery BrohmanNow more than ever, healthcare remains the primary focus in the world, and in our community.

When a pandemic like COVID-19 is impacting healthcare systems, the work in hospitals can intensify greatly. Our work has always remained the same, to support Island Health’s most critical need at any given time.

The stories we have been sharing with you throughout our current campaign are just some of the daily healthcare journeys our patients and frontline staff experience. Around the clock, over 6,500 physicians and care teams are there when we need. They care for us through broken bones, heart attacks and when a virus strikes.

As Executive Director of the Foundation, I’m so inspired by our mission, and by the spirit of our community you will explore in these stories.

Your friends and neighbours will move you, and in turn, you will see your part in The Big Picture. Your part in this transformation. It takes each and every one of us to make world-class healthcare a priority in our community.

These are just some of the people who benefit from the generosity of our supporters.

Every year, over 4,000 generous donors unite to fund 40 per cent of the equipment at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals. Our donors change the lives of thousands of Vancouver Islanders every year, at times when their lives may depend on it.

Last November, at our signature Visions gala, we launched our first-ever annual fundraising campaign, The Big Picture. This ambitious $4-million effort will improve access to leading-edge medical imaging equipment right here at home. And it will have incredible impact. Over half of all healthcare encounters in our hospitals rely on imaging.

In just four months, our family of donors has raised more than $2.8 million toward The Big Picture. Your gifts may be local, but their impact is far-reaching and will be long-lasting.

Equipment like CT scanners, MRI s, and ultrasounds make diagnosis faster, more accurate, and less invasive.

They provide high-definition images for our care teams. A decade ago, your phone and computer looked very different than they do now. The same applies to our imaging equipment. Your contributions make each image clearer and more detailed. That matters.

When we walk the halls of our hospitals, we are filled with immense pride for what we see and hear. Every day, clinicians use tools people like you helped to put in their hands. And they tell us how grateful they are. To the caregivers and patients who tell their stories on our behalf, you make us feel the impact of every donation. You show us how new equipment can change lives.

To anyone thinking about making a donation, please know that you make our mission to transform healthcare possible. With every gift — large or small — you make a tangible difference in our community. You bring The Big Picture into focus.

You are the giving heart of our community.

I hope you’ll share in our inspiration from these stories. That they’ll inspire conversations you have with those close to you. And that those conversations will inspire action. We will all be better for it.

In gratitude,

Avery Brohman
