Health Canada is warning dog owners in B.C. to check the lot number on bags of Raw Frozen Primal Patties for Dogs Beef Formula after a recall notice was issued for the product in this province.
The notice urges pet owners to immediately stop using the product with lot code number W10068709 and dispose of the dog food.
The lot code number and best by date can be found on the back of the product packaging above the Primal Pet Foods Inc. red oval logo.
Primal Pet Foods said seven cases containing 42 units of the affected product were sold in Canada between April and July 2022.
According to Primal, the brand is sold in 17 stores in Victoria, including Bosley’s locations, the Bone and Biscuit, Pet Planet, Mr. Pet’s, Pet Valu locations, Island Pet Source and Growlies. However, some stores might not carry the recalled product.
The recalled pet food may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, posing a risk of cross contamination and illness after handling the pet food.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in humans and animals.
There is risk to humans from handling the product, especially if they do not thoroughly washed their hands afterward.
Young children, pregnant women, frail or elderly people, and people with weakened immune symptoms may be more susceptible to illness.
Symptoms of infection may include nausea, vomiting, aches, fever, and diarrhea, and may lead to more serious issues such as meningitis and abortion.
Animals infected with Listeria monocytogenes may display similar symptoms.
