MOVIES

What: Cineplex Community Day

Where: Cineplex Odeon, SilverCity, Westshore Cinemas

When: Saturday morning, doors 8: 30. Showtimes starting from 9 to 10: 15

Why: This is the reel deal - a chance to escape the rain with family and friends and see free movies for a good cause. Choices include Transformers: Dark of the Moon 3D, How to Train Your Dragon, Hugo 3D, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Kung Fu Panda 2 3D or Puss In Boots. Volunteers will sell regular-sized popcorn, soft drinks and select candy items for $2 each, with proceeds from Cineplex Entertainment's second annual National Community Day fundraiser aiding Starlight Children's Foundation, the non-profit that aims to improve the quality of life for sick children and their families. - Michael D. LITERATURE

What: Ekstasis Editions 30th anniversary celebration

Where: Hermann's Jazz Club

When: Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Tickets: $10 (toward the writers of Pacific Rim Review of Books)

Why: Victoria's Ekstasis Editions has published books by the likes of John Gould, Stephen Scobie and Linda Rogers for three decades - a bona fide achievement in the fickle publishing business. For this celebration, publisher Richard Olafson has invited Ekstasis and other authors to read. As well, jazz singer Carole Sokoloff will perform with Trio Espresso.

Attendees will receive an Ekstasis book - and the opportunity to take part in a literary speed-reading game.

CLASSICAL MUSIC

What: Sara Davis Bueckner and the Vancouver Island Symphony

Where: Port Theatre, Nanaimo

When: Saturday, 7: 30 p.m.

Tickets: $18 (student) to $84 at the Port Theatre porttheatre.com or 250-754-8550.

Why: Bach, Beethoven, Brahms - looks like maestro Pierre Simard knew what he was talking about when he called the Vancouver Island Symphony's season opener 'B is for Brilliance.' Oh yeah - one more reason: Sara Davis Bueckner. The international pianist and guest artist has performed more than 100 concertos around the world, but chooses Vancouver as her home.

Take advantage of her proximity.
