Juror comment: “I’ve long thought Jets are, hands down, the best band in Victoria.”

The genesis of Jets Overhead dates back nearly 15 years, to when various members of the group were still in their teens.

But it wasn’t until the last few years that the band fully explored its sonic possibilities and fine-tuned its sound to what it is today: A slab of sonic textures that gets better — and deeper — with each listen.

“We’ve definitely leaned on the term atmospheric,” Kittredge said of the band’s sound. “Our goal is to take the listener on a journey, that’s for sure.”

The band’s own journey has been a rocket-ship ride during the past few years — one which is largely unmatched by other groups in the city.

During the past 18 months, the group has appeared at nearly every major music festival, including Rifflandia, Coachella, Sasquatch, the Bridge School Benefit, Bonnaroo and South By Southwest. Jets Overhead has even done two tours of shows in China.

Those helped build confidence as the band prepares to release a five-song EP, Bystander, in February, complete with help from master mixer Mike Fraser of AC/DC and Metallica fame.

“We want to give fans some new music to listen to while we’re writing songs for our new album,” Kittredge said. “A buffer.”
