This 2001 aerial view was taken during the Lions Gate Bridge deck replacement project.
Between September 2000 and September 2001, the suspended structure of the then 60-year old bridge was replaced, section by section, during 10-hour nighttime closures plus a few longer closures on weekends. The work was mostly done at night so as not to interrupt the daily flow of traffic.
This photo of the North Shore staging area shows a new bridge section being raised by the jacking traveller. The jacking traveller was used as a temporary link when each of the 47 deck sections were replaced and was also used for lifting and lowering the sections into place. The final paving was applied in the summer of 2002.
