Studio sheds offer more than just storage

Prefab structures used for man-caves, yoga studios and even banjo lessons

A shed is a must for any gardener.

It's where you plot your plans for your next butterfly garden.

It's where you sort your seeds for next year's vegetable garden. It's where you relax and drink a cool beverage after a hot day weeding and watering. And sometimes, a backyard shed becomes more than just a garden building - it becomes a respite from anything and for everything.

That's what Studio Shed LLC is counting on.

The manufacturer, in Boulder, Colorado, offers prefabricated structures you can use for garden supplies, home-office needs or studio space. Some families use them as detached getaways from the main house, according to a company spokeswoman.

Others use them as exercise spaces, yoga or pottery studios and even man-caves.

Studio Shed's customizable models come pre-packed with in-wall wiring and options like finished interiors, Cloudlight windows and roof, glass fronts and French doors.

Roofing is 24-gauge corrugated metal on top of weather paper.

Now the company features a "shed configurator" that allows you to configure and cost out almost any design you want. Just select the size, style, elements and materials you want and a price will be tallied.

"People come to us looking for extra space without having to move or undertake major home renovations," said co-owner Mike Koenig, in a statement.

"They want style and efficiency with customizable options at a reasonable price. Some customize a little, some a lot. One client set his shed up to teach banjo by Skype to students worldwide."

Studio Shed's pricing starts at $10,750 ($89/square foot) for a 10-by-12-foot lifestyle model with finished interior, plus shipping (starts at $950) and installation (starts at $1,550 for a regional certified Studio Shed installation team).

A 10-by-12 foot Storage model that comes with unfinished interior, a steel door and clerestory windows starts at $7,200 ($60 square foot) plus shipping (starts at $945) plus installation (starts at $950).

Garage models and DIY kits are also available. A permit services department helps customers with building permit needs.
