Victoria violinist Timothy Chooi has been named the most accomplished young musician at this year’s Verbier Festival in Switzerland.

Chooi, 24, received $25,000 US for the prize, one of the most prestigious in classical music in Europe. The Victoria Conservatory of Music graduate, who began playing his instrument at the age of three, recently made his solo debut at Carnegie Hall in New York, and is pursuing post-graduate studies at the Juilliard School. He lives in Philadelphia.

His win in Switzerland comes three months after another prestigious win, at the Schadt String Competition in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Chooi took home $8,000 US in winnings at the competition, and earned himself a solo concerto with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra this year.
